I remember trying to dig up a shoot from the stump of the saucer magnolia at the green house. I dug around the base but couldn’t find anything with roots. Finally, I just chipped off a wedge of the trunk with the shovel blade–it had two green sprouts attached but no roots–and I was so happy when it grew.
